It's all about physics The direct-injected 2-liter four-cylinder engine is quiet and extremely well behaved. With the transmission in Sport mode, it sounds nice enough and responds willingly. Full-throttle from the metering lights will let you bust the speed limit before you merge. However, compared to other cars with similar levels of sophistication, size and handling -- such as a VW GTI or a Honda Civic Si -- it's simply not as powerful. We're talking basic physics here and 160 horsepower in a 3100-pound car is not going to win any drag races. But anything faster is going to have a bigger appetite. The EPA rates this car at 27 mpg city, 37 highway and 31 combined (those are U.S. gallons for my British friends. Ford Canada claims 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers, but that's reported to be optimistic). My real-world average thus far -- with a 100-mile round-trip freeway commutes, a few errands around town and about 20 minutes per day in stop-and-go traffic is 32 mpg. If you want to drop your carbon footprint even further, Ford is rolling out a battery electric version of the Focus next month. Unfortunately, the 100-mile maximum range and $35,000 up-front cost of the BEV Focus don't work for me. Until they get the range up and the cost down, I'm quite happy with what I've got.
