Joyce Kilmer Natural Area, Union County, within Bald Eagle State Forest. The natural area, accessible from the blue-blazed Joyce Kilmer Trail, protects a tract of old-growth hemlocks on the talus-covered north slope of Paddy Mountain. Sadly, the area is heavily infested with the hemlock woolly adelgid, an exotic insect pest. On my last visit, I noticed many dead or dying trees. On this particular visit, however, I found pockets of healthier trees along Laurel Run and on the mountain slope wherever the talus was least dense.
