Old mine entrance near the Desert Studies Center - Soda Springs Ca. The California State University, Desert Studies Center is 8 miles south of Baker Ca. in the Mojave Desert. The Center is located on the shore of Soda Dry Lake in an area commonly known as Zzyzx - a name created by Evangelist Dr. Curtis H. Springer. In the 30s. Dr. Springer staked a claim on the land.
