The Ford LTD is a six-passenger automobile produced in North America from 1965 to 1986. This highly prolific design evolved into the ubiquitous Crown Victoria of contemporary U.S. and Canadian police and taxi fleets. In the first year, 1965, LTD was simply the badge affixed to the luxury version of the Galaxy 500. While “LTD” implied “limited edition,” the name was eventually applied to all full-size Fords, even the iconic yellow taxicabs of New York City. In the 1970s and 1980s, the civilian version became associated with suburban conformity, material excess and joyless conservatism. Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) takes the family to Wally World in lightly disguised LTD Country Squire station wagon in the 1982 film National Lampoon's Vacation. But long after minivans and SUVs displaced wood-paneled station wagons in suburban driveways, the LTD and Crown Victoria continued to be the value choice for fleet buyers. The front-engine, body-on-frame construction is as durable as an anvil and about as cheap to maintain. This mechanical simplicity comes at an economic price: the truck-like technology is heavy and therefore thirsty. Mediocre fuel economy eventually lead the sauropod’s extinction. The final Crown Vic rolled off the St. Thomas, Ontario, assembly line Sept.15, 2011, exported to a fleet buyer in Saudi Arabia, where fuel economy is presumably not an immediate concern. But these biggest of Ford sedans, AKA “the Fat Lady,” hasn’t quite sang her swan song. The final Crown Vics, with the 4.6 liter Modular V8, are quite capable of achieving 350,000 miles (500,000 km) with diligent maintenance. And parts are cheap and plentiful. Expect to see them on road for years to come. There was a buying spree at the end, with some cab companies and police departments stockpiling new 2011-model-year cars for later use. The LTD nameplate was also applied to some smaller, mid-size cars, in the 1980s, but the name is best associated with the iconic full-size car favored by cops, cabbies and senior citizens. In Australia, Ford LTD was a completely different a full-size, long-wheelbase car. While it shared no sheet metal with the North American car, it filled a similar role in the vehicular biosphere. The Oz LTD was discontinued in 2007. The one above, with vintage George W. Bush bumper stickers, is likely a 1977 model owned by a Republican. Just a guess,
