My first Helios 44-2 on the left, made by KMZ. Today's new arrival, a 44-2 by MMZ on the right. I love and use my Helios 44-2 so much that I decided to get another one. They're still plentiful and reasonably priced, plus with tonnes of character, especially when shot wide open. I will have to do some side by side shootout comparisons, but they feel uniquely different. The KMZ feels more solidly built, but notice the air bubble(s) in the element(s). To me, it gives character, especially with bokeh. The MMZ has super smooth focusing, one finger focusing in fact. I like the cyrillic engraving too, which means it was probably made for the domestic market. So far, it seems to be reasonably sharp too.
