Large (possibly old-growth) pitch pine (Pinus rigida), Tiadaghton State Forest, Lycoming County, along the Black Forest Trail. Pitch pines are hardy, adaptable trees tolerant of fire, climate extremes, and poor soil—harsh conditions that often stunt and deform the trees. The tree in the photo—tall and bulky, with abundant cones, a spreading canopy, and thick plates of bark—was a rare, impressive sight. It may have sprouted a century or so ago, when logging-era wildfires swept through this and other areas of the Allegheny Plateau.
