Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae), Lycoming County–Tioga County line, within the Algerine Swamp Natural Area of Tiadaghton State Forest. The hemlock woolly adelgid is an exotic insect pest that has wreaked havoc on forest and stream ecosystems across eastern North America. Small, white, cottony sacs at the base of the needles indicate the insects’ presence. In the natural area, I found several lightly infested trees near Gamble Run Road. Trees along Pine Creek and in other nearby lower-elevation areas are more heavily infested.
