Second-growth hemlock–white pine–hardwood forest, Lycoming County, along the Mid State Trail in the Bark Cabin Natural Area of Tiadaghton State Forest. Stands of old-growth trees are found off-trail. Along the trail, the diverse stands of second-growth trees are impressive in their own right—covered with moss and lichens and rising tall and wide above the rich undergrowth. I found some hemlock woolly adelgid here; however, the trees are still healthy and flourishing. Nearby lower-elevation areas, including Little Pine State Park, are more heavily infested.
