This group of sculptures is another piece of Aw Tee Hong’s creations. Its shows the prominent merchant of the early days, Scottish Alexandre Laurie Johnston, negotiating with a Chinese trader and a Malay chief, while the Indian and Chinese coolies were loading goods onto a bullock cart. Johnston set up his company at the current spot (present-day Maybank Tower) in 1820, which was commonly known as Tanjong Tangkap (means “catch” in Malay), because his godown was the nearest to the mouth of Singapore River and he would be the first to “catch” the merchant captains as their boats entered the river. The highly respected Johnston was the first chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, and he also introduced the five-foot way, an unique covered walkway of local traditional shophouses.
