Tucked under the bridge is Fort Point built in 1853. They never fired a shot. Construction began on January 5th, 1933. The bridge opened for traffic on May 28, 1937 at a cost of $35 million. The Golden Gate Bridge is the second-most used suicide site in the world, after the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. The deck is about 245 feet above the water. After a fall of four seconds, jumpers hit the water at around 75 mph. Most of the jumpers die from impact trauma. About 5% of the jumpers survive the initial impact but generally drown or die of hypothermia in the cold water.
