Construction of Fort Point began in 1853. It is a partial replica of Fort Sumpter and is the only brick fort west of the Mississippi. Its sea wall has stood undamaged for 100 years. Overhead is the Golden Gate Bridge - During construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, Chief Engineer Joseph Strauss redesigned the bridge to preserve the fortress as a “fine example of the mason’s art.”
