I drove up to Silverton, CO, this week, to hike around a bit and claim some solitude. This shot is at Clear Lake, elev. 12,300 ft. I spent the night there in my truck and the next morning drove down to 10,000 ft and hiked back up to Island Lake, which is just over the ridge from Clear Lake. I wanted to get up to the ridge to visit the memorial plaque of Joel Zucker, an acquaintance who died shortly after finishing the Hardrock 100 a few years ago. I think everybody who met Joel thought of him as a friend; he was so enthusiastic and amiable -- and loud, that thick Brooklyn accent booming out down the trail before you could see him coming. He loved dogs, and those of us who knew him (dogs and humans) miss him. I got close to the ridge and the plaque, but the last hundred feet is very steep and I decided to turn around. Here, from the comfort of home, this seems puzzling. They are running the Hardrock today, and as I type this runners are cresting the ridge with 20 miles still to go; I know some of them will stop for a moment to be with Joel.
