I got started today on my yard project of building a walkway... at a $0 material cost. All of the sandstone rock comes from my property, where you cannot put a shovel in the ground without hitting a big rock. It's kind of fun (well my kind of fun) to try and piece them together; I have piles strewn about, roughly organized by thickness. Once in place, I have a wheelbarrow of really dry finer dirt (excavated from the road material that gets piled up on my property by the snow plower) that I use to fill in the cracks. Sweeping with an old broomhead, I can fill in the spaces pretty well. The stuff is so hard when it dries, that is holds the rock really well. It runs down a slope, so I'm trying to step it down; the edge of that one riser is done with the old ugly pavers that was formerly the walkway. But wow, I got about 8 feet of distance done in about 4 hours of work... and there's at least another 20 feet to reach the gate (down to the right), not too mention going more in the back direction.
