Driving home from work today, I spotted this dreamy 1969 Porsche 912 Targa on the 80 Freeway. This particular year and configuration has always been on my short list of coveted cars (not that I could afford one like this). With an air-cooled1600 cc four-cylinder engine and a price like a high-end Ford Mustang, the Porsche 912 was entry level Porsche from 1965 to 1969. Its sibling, the faster and more expensive 911 stole all the glory, with two additional cylinders and soundtrack right out of the movie “Le Mans.” While the 912 sounded a bit more like a VW Bug, it had its own charm. When driven within its intended envelope, it delivered European comfort, delightful handling and 30 mpg on road trips. This exceedingly handsome example is from the final year of 912 Targas. According to the 912 Registry, Porsche sold a mere 2,562 912 Targas worldwide in its five-year-run. www.912registry.org/restore/openroof.htm That would make this survivor quite uncommon, indeed. Anyone wish to share next week’s winning Super Lotto numbers?
