Rock bald at the summit of Bartlett Mountain, Wyoming County, within State Game Land 57. Numerous rock balds are scattered across the broad, low-relief mountain summit. Fractured outcrops of sandstone and conglomerate rock form the balds. The pale coloration of the rock surface gives rise to the balds' common local name: White Rocks. Lichens, moss, and heaths cover much of the rock surface. Immediately surrounding the balds, as well as in pockets of soil on the rock surface, is an open woodland of conifers (mostly hemlock, pitch pine, and red spruce) and hardwoods (mostly aspen, red maple, and white birch). The presence of red spruce gives rise to the name of this forest community: red spruce rocky summit. Bartlett Mountain is the only location in Pennsylvania where this community has been documented.
