Dawn over the West Highlands of Scotland. The photo was taken after an early morning hike up the Devil's Staircase in Glencoe. The mountains are Beinn a'Chrulaiste (centre left) and Buachaille Etive Mòr (The Great Shepherd of the Glens - centre right). The river in the distance is the River Coupall beginning its long descent down Glen Etive to the sea. A 4.30AM rise and a drive up to Glencoe saw me start the climb to this point using a head torch. What continuously surprises me is how empty the Highlands of Scotland are in the early mornings. I was alone on the mountain to witness this spectacular sight. After pausing to take some photos I continued the climb up to Stob Mhic Mhartuin for my traditional Scottish breakfast of coffee and jaffa cakes. The next two climbers up the mountain about an hour later were German tourists cursing themselves for having missed the sunrise.
