Kids Day is a program for children from nearby towns to come to the air base for a day of games and sports. Each child was paired up with an American service member mentor. So it was also a chance for the service members to forget about the grownup world for day. I think there is some fundamental need for laughter and play, regardless of age. It was wonderful to watch, although it sounded little like being trapped in a Chuck E. Cheese with bad acoustics (is that a triple redundancy?). Unexpectedly, the experience lifted my spirits. I didn't realize how much I missed the sound of children's laughter. The program has been wildly popular with all concerned (they have way more volunteers than the program can accommodate). Even a year ago, I don't think we could have done this. Now it seems so normal. Once again I was reminded, we adults have a lot to learn about life from kids.
