It's been said more than 20 kit-car companies and small-run manufacturers have produced over 40,000 Cobra replicas, a good deal more than the roughly 830 produced by Shelby from 1962-1967. The original Cobra, sold as the Ford/Shelby AC Cobra, was a classic example of stuffing a big engine in a small body. Carol Shelby installed a Ford 260 V8 engine into a British made AC Ace-Bristol, creating an instant Anglo-American classic. The original Cobra was about the size and weight of today’s Mazda Miata, but the V8 made it a Ferrari killer on both street and track. The original run cumulated with the off-the-chain 427 Cobras, with their cartoon fenders and 7.0 L engine. It’s this last version that most replicas are based. Side note: One of the last 427 roadsters was given to Shelby's close friend, Bill Cosby.
