You could say that this is the most western volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes. Being there you could measure the highest point at about 3914 m above sea level and then you could descend the 300 metres in altitude down to the lake which is situated in the 3 kilometres wide caldera. The water of this 250 m deep lake has its color from minerals and the floor of the lake is inhabited from fumaroles, which state what this is and what has happened here. Then you quite sure will be happy that you have missed the last eruption by about 800 years, because the eruption indeed had a classification of 6 in the Volcanic Explosivity Index, which means in words: “Colossal”. I mean the pyroclastic flows and lahars reached until to the pacific ocean which is nearly 200 km far far away. Numbers that have potential to impress. Nevertheless, all these figures are not able to impress as much as the experience of just being there combined with a little pinch of imagination. Oh, and before I forget. Climbing back up to the top in this altitude will give you more than just one pinch to your lungs and will surprisingly take longer as thought before.
