If the twelve longest rivers of the world would be called by the months of our year, the Mekong-River would be December. On it´s 4350 km long journey from the Tibetan Plateau to the sea it visits China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It has been a major trading route since thousands of years, though the presence of rapids and waterfalls can make navigation difficult and the journey on one of the “Slow-boats” quite interesting. The english name derives from “Mae Nam Khong” (Thai and Lao origin), which means: “Khong, the mother of water”. It is also the mother of a few lasting Irrawaddy Dolphins (freshwater dolphins) in Lower Mekong (Lao/Cambodian border area). Not many are left though. On this picture you see some people finding their way somewhere between PakBeng and Luang Prabang. Mighty!
