Habit (latin: habeo; “I have, hold, keep, own”), what a good establishment you are. You give my life some structure, safety, confidence and quality. You there, you habit which creeps in silently, comes uninvited, needs no effort, you it is not I am talking about. A “bad” habit you are. I am talking about the habit which needs quite an effort to install. A habit which can guide one through a field of rabbits. Rabbit, a mammal of the family Leporidae, with long ears, long hind legs and a short, fluffy tail. But I am not talking about these. I see them here more in terms of distractions during a day. Hoppling here, hoppling there, always on the search for grass or comfort. It is not wise to constantly follow them, because they are too shortsighted. So let's translate: The walk with the dog is an example for a habit. Everyday, no matter how the weather is, you come to you portion fresh air and mild movement, and this can be one of many bricks, which can build your wall of contentment. If there was not this habit or dog, the person probably would have looked out of the window this morning, and from there on a straight walk to the coffee machine or back to bed, just as the rabbits tell him to (“all about saving energy it is”, they mumble). Habits have the downside, that they need more energy to install, but, once on board, only little energy to keep them going. So you actually win in the long run. A daily walk, writing diary, reading before sleeping, sports, healthy eating, meditating whatever it is, it can enrich your life. All you have to do is to chose one, and invest in one. Two things though make it easier and may keep you from stumbling. Divide your life goal into tiny little “micro”-habits. Make the steps tiny (like “no sugar in my coffee” instead of “living like Mahatma Gandhi from this second on”). Stick to the habit until it is automated (like a month) and move only then to the next “micro”-habit. It may be a little better, then repeating the same life-change-resolutions each year, I think. And remember: Effort it is, which distinguishes a “helpful” from an “unhelpful” habit, or in other words, a habit from a rabbit.
