I drove down to Tajique today to check out the only stand of Maples in New Mexico. The place is called Fourth of July Canyon, though it isn't in much of a canyon. It is in the National Forest. The campground was closed due to the government shutdown, and the gate at the entrance had a sign saying to take all of your trash with you because there wouldn't be any pick up. About half a dozen cars were parked there at the closed gate. You could squeeze through without much trouble. The leaves near the campground were not that great, so I drove on down the 55 loop and found some good places in the next mile or two. While I was walking around a Forest Service truck drove by. I guess they aren't all on furlough (er, paid vacation).
