“The size of a thimble” or a “thimbleful” is a common folk measurement in the English-speaking world. Searches on the web will provide many references for the volume of a thimble as 1 cm3 = or one milliliter. books.google.com/books?isbn=0521546222... cdis.missouri.edu/exec/data/courses2/coursegraphics/6518/... “(A) thimble full of neutron star material will have the mass of 7 x 10-8 tonnes.” This is incorrect. A common medium-size thimble actually has a volume of about 2.1 Ml (2.1 cc). I measured a medium thimble bought from the local sewing store. This is a pinch less than half a dram. (a dram being about 4 mL in the United States and 3.5 mL in the UK, Australia and Canada.) In case you are wondering, a wee dram (2.1 ml) of whisky is barely enough to whet your whistle.
