News item: Chrysler LLC and Fiat SpA reach an agreement with U.S. and Canadian unions that may save Chrysler from liquidation. www.freep.com/article/20090426/BUSINESS01/90426033/UAW+re... About the same time the agreement was reached, I spotted this license plate on this 1973 124 in the supermarket parking lot. If you don’t know the joke, it goes like this: “Fiat” = “Fix It Again, Tony.” No hate mail, okay? I really like Fiats, having owned two in my misspent youth. The ones I’ve rented in Europe in the last few years were fun and sporty and a delight to drive. That said, both Chrysler and Fiat have a reputation great design, good value and poor build quality. The engines may last forever, but the door handles fall off. Or in the old technology days -- when they still sold Fiats in the United States -- even cars in snow-free regions rusted quickly. Chryslers from the 1970s and 1980s did no better. Sounds like a marriage made in heaven? We’ll see. The future is stranger than any of us can imagine. www.usatoday.com/money/autos/2009-03-31-fiat_N.htm
