This little spider is a true marvel. It is a slow moving, nocturnal, hunter. To capture it's prey, it will sneak up very carefully on it. It then uses special hairs on the end of their legs to gauge the distance to it's victim. Once close enough, it spits two jets of sticky silk and venom at 1/600 sec, in a zig-zag pattern, upto 10mm. This immediately immobilizes the prey, sticking it to the surface.. For larger prey, it will spit repeatedly. Once the prey is immobile, the spitting spider will dispatch the victim with a bite to the leg. The squirting of silk/venom is also used as a defensive measure against other spiders. Here in the UK, these beauties generally live inside heated homes, but are harmless to humans (so please, fellow arachnophobes, don't kill them). The females can take two to three years to reach full maturity, and can be seen all year round (peaking in July).
