Old-growth hemlocks and understory of American beech saplings, McKean County, within the Tionesta Scenic Area of Allegheny National Forest. The Tionesta Scenic and Research Natural Areas encompass 4000-plus acres of old-growth forest. The forest is magnificent; however, the combined effects of beech bark disease and weather disturbances (particularly the May 31, 1985, tornado outbreak) have greatly opened the forest canopy. Most of the old-growth American beeches have succumbed to beech bark disease. The root systems of the dead trees continue to produce new growth, forming dense, junglelike thickets of saplings, or root suckers, that choke the walking trails. During my hike, I often had to use my walking sticks as machetes.
