The last Lyon's Restaurant closed its doors in Sacramento this weekend. Once a chain restaurants, similar to Denny's, Howard Johnson's and iHop, the closure reflects a change in North American dining habits. Lyon's was founded in San Francisco in in the early in the 1950s. The family business was was bought out by a megacorporation in the 1960s. At its peak in the 1970s, Lyon's had 65 restaurants across California and several western states. For decades it did a brisk business as a high-end coffee shop, with traditional breakfast and a full-service bar available 24/7. A signature element in most Lyon’s was a gas-fired fireplace. Changing tastes and economics closed one restaurant after another. The last one, this one, closed in Sacramento at midnight, March 25, 2012. The space will be reincarnated as a Mel’s Diner in a few months. sacramento.cbslocal.com/2012/03/25/nations-remaining-lyon...
