To get to the lava tube in Mojave National Preserve, drive up Kelbaker Road about 15 miles north from the Kelso Depot and turn right (northeast) onto Aiken Mine Road. This dirt road is unmarked and easy to miss. After about five miles, take the left fork and shortly thereafter arrive at a parking area. Climb up the short trail to the lava tube entrance. There you will find a ten-foot-long steel ladder that you can climb down into the tube itself. The tube extends for maybe a hundred feet. You can walk through most of it, but there is one short stretch where the ceiling is only about three feet above the floor. I had to crawl through this part. On the other side of the crawl space are several vents to the surface that let the afternoon light pass through, creating the “shafts of light” effect. In winter the sun angle is low and when I was there only two of the shafts were visible. Later in the year, when the sun is higher in the sky, the shafts would be closer to vertical, and there might be three or four. So I gathered up my trekking pole and camera bag and tripod and climbed up the hill and down the ladder. That was when I realized that I would need a flashlight. So I put my stuff down and climbed back up the ladder and headed for the truck. I got about halfway there when it occurred to me that the truck was locked and the key was in my pack back in the tube. So I turned around and hiked back up the hill and down the ladder, got the key, went back up the ladder and down to the truck, got the flashlight, back up the hill, down the ladder, into the tube, crawled through the low part, and set up the tripod. I unzipped my camera bag to get out the camera, but it wasn’t there. It was back in the truck. So, back through the crawly part, up the ladder, then back down to get the key, back up, to the truck, etc., got the camera, back up the hill, etc., etc.. I hung around for about an hour and took lots of shots. It helps to throw some dust up in the air. The first time I tried it, it came right back down on my face, which gave my eyes fits. I thought I might have to leave immediately and go take out my contact lenses, but after a few blinks most of the pain went away. When I got back to the truck later and removed my contacts, it really hurt for a while. But no lasting damage was done. All told, a great adventure!
