Old-growth yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis), McKean County, within the Tionesta Research Natural Area of Allegheny National Forest. The exposed, stilted roots have grown from the stump of a decayed, fallen tree. The Tionesta Scenic and Research Natural Areas encompass 4000-plus acres of old-growth forest. The forest is magnificent; however, the combined effects of beech bark disease and weather disturbances (particularly the May 31, 1985, tornado outbreak) have greatly opened the forest canopy.
