I labored about 5 hours Sunday to revamp what was a weed covered mound in front of my house. Its there partly to divert water from draining towards the house. Previously there were manzanita bushes there, but they are a fire danger. So the project involved first turning the heavy clay soil, yanking up some boulders from elsewhere in the yard, leveling, turning dirt again, mixing in some compost and other mulchy type stuff scavenged form around a nearby Juniper tree. I also have some drainage features, including a channel for runoff piped under the surface to a central area filled with rock as a mini aquifer. For now, I am trying to transplant flowers from elsewhere in the yard- irises, poppies, a few marigolds. Everything is looking a bit stressed from the transplant.
