I was lying in the back of my truck and looking out the window at the featureless grey sky. I thought “Well, at least I don’t have to drive around looking for a nice setting for a sunset.” A few minutes later, the far west horizon began to clear. So I slipped out and put on my shoes, got in the cab, and headed out from the campground. It was only a mile or two to the park entrance. The entrance booth was closed and there were two cars blocking the road. Someone was filling out one of those envelopes that you are supposed to put money in if the booth is unattended. I sat there and felt my blood pressure rise as the sky started to get some color. I guess they noticed that I wasn’t looking very happy, because they got in their cars and pulled forward past the gate so that I could get through. The “Speed Limit 25” sign became just a suggestion in my mind as I drove while glancing down at the map, looking for a place nearby that would offer a decent foreground. There was a viewpoint at the end of the main park road, at the Confluence Overlook trailhead. I hadn’t been out there, but the word “Viewpoint” seemed promising. After a few minutes, as the clouds were approaching pinkness, I reached the end of the road. It was nice, but nothing special. I turned around in desperation. Returning, I noticed a promising view to the south. There was no real place to pull off, so I made one. Grabbing my camera and tripod, I raced out onto the slick rock a hundred feet or so and set up in time to get this shot.
