This week I bought my third Mercury vehicle, a used grey 2003 Sable -- for a commuter car (1st was a '67 Cougar just out of high school, second was a '72 Comet in college). My new acquisition is pictured here at Discount Tire. Mildly ironically, this same week the very last Mercury rolled off the assembly line in Ontario: a boat-sized Grand Marquis. Ford Motor Company didn't even bother to document the occasion with a photograph :( There was no coverage in the mainstream media. That last Grand Marquis sold to an undisclosed fleet buyer, where it will probably serve in anonymity. Oh, well. www.autoweek.com/article/20110104/CARNEWS/110109982 Mercury was once an automobile marque of the Ford Motor Company, founded in 1939 as "step up" from Ford-brand vehicles. The nameplate now follows many other North American car brands into oblivion: Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Duesenberg, DeSoto, Edsel, Checker, Plymouth, Hummer, Saturn, Geo, Acadian, Nash, Hudson, Studebaker, Packard, AMC, Rambler and Tucker. I can't say I disagree with the Dearborn bean counters. The Mercury band, once an "upscale" Ford, became just another car. In the used-car world, this Sable was indistinguishable from most of the Ford Tauruses I was test driving. I likely got a good deal *because* it was a Mercury. Kind of sad: it's a nice car.
