A view from the small hamlet of Portencross in North Ayrshire in Scotland looking across the Firth of Clyde to the islands of Arran (left) and Great and Little Cumbrae (right). Portencross was the last mainland resting place of the ancient Kings of Scotland. Between the times of Kenneth MacAlpine (CE 810-858) through to the reign of Malcolm III (CE 1030-1093), the bodies of former kings were taken by road from the east of Scotland, and from Portencross they were ferried to Iona where they would be buried.
