Finnich Gorge, Scotland. For one week of the year, between 0650 and 0700 hours in late May, the sun aligns with the narrow gorge casting a light on the Devil's Pulpit behind this point. Earlier in the year the sun doesn't rise high enough to shine down the gorge: later in the year it is too high and at the wrong angle. The walls of the gorge rise two to three hundred feet (one hundred metres) and narrow at some points to just a few feet. I had been planning this shot for three years, the last two years it was cloudy and overcast and no sunlight. To get to the bottom of the gorge I had to scramble down the 300 year old Devil's Staircase cut into the rocks, some of which have collapsed in places. The gorge was a secret meeting place for the Druid Priests of the old religions two to three thousand years ago. Persistence (or insanity) pays off.
