Shifting baselines The automatic transmission has a distinctive personality, which I rather like. Unlike the liquid-filled torque converter of a traditional automatic, this one has two dry clutches. It is essentially a computer-controlled manual transmission. Creeping along in traffic, you can sometimes feel the clutches engage and disengage. Starting on a hill, you might roll back a bit at first - exactly like you might with a shift-yourself manual. The trade-off for these little quirks significantly higher efficiency than a conventional automatic provides. We have come expect an automatic to be slower and more fuelish than the manual version of the same car. This time it's the other way around: the EPA rates the automatic equipped Focus as more fugal than the base stick-shift version and I suspect the six-speed auto accelerates marginally faster than its 5-speed manual brethren. When you're not thinking about climate change, you can shift the selector lever from D to S. In Sport mode, the Focus will hold revs higher and shift down faster when you give it the spurs. There's a rocker on the side of the shifter to let the driver shift up or down, but superfluous - the computer does an excellent job of selecting ratios. There are no paddle shifters. While I'm quite pleased with the transmission, some reviewers in the automotive press -- notably Consumer Reports and Car & Driver -- found it to be less refined than a traditional automatic.
