This is a followup on the loss of resolution I have been seeing with Photomatix HDR software. Please note that this is not a test of anything but sharpness of the resulting image; it has nothing to do with colors, contrast, saturation, or whether the image even needs HDR or how much. It is just about the sharpness of a five-shot (1 ev spaced) HDR sequence taken of the totally uninteresting hill behind my house, and rendered with the default settings of the software. After making the composite, I did rebalance each image to make them all more or less similar. this involved curves and saturation adjustments in Photoshop. If you haven't already read my original post, you might benefit from reading it now. It appears to me that the Nik HDR Efex Pro 2 software does the best job of retaining the sharpness of the original image, with the Unified Color HDR Expose 2 doing almost as well. Photomatix tone mapping lags behind in sharpness. I'm thinking that the difference is sufficient to make me switch from Photomatix to one of the others. I'll have to check out features, speed, and finished images before deciding.
