In nearly every regard, the Miata is a marvel of thoughtful design and engineering. The placement of the oil filter is one significant exception, which is a total b***ch to replace. In fact, it’s hard to even see it, much less get a wrench on it. With the car on a jack stand and the right, front wheel removed, you can reach up into the fenderwell to the oil filter. If you’re lucky, and the filter was not overtightened when installed, you’re going to be able to twist it off by hand. It’s going to leak dirty oil when you remove it, so have plenty of shop rags on hand. When installing the new filter, apply light coat of fresh oil to the gasket and tighten only three-quarters of a turn more after the gasket contacts the face of the housing (Madza says 1-1/16 turn). In any event, always hand tight; never use a wrench. -go to step 4-
