Gray iron is a type of cast iron once used extensively in the North American automotive industry for cast components, such as engine blocks and gear cases. Although cheap, durable and extremely versatile, it is also much heavier than aluminum alloy or plastic alternatives. The material is predominantly iron (Fe) mixed with 2.1 to 4 percent carbon (C) and 1 to 3 percent silicon (Si). Alloys of iron with lower carbon content are usually called steel. The last significant gray iron application still found on nearly every modern car is the disk brake rotor. If the grey iron components of this 1970 Chevrolet (not counting the brake rotors) were magically transmuted into aluminum, the car would be as much as 500 pounds / 225 kg lighter.
